I work with a woman who weighs approximately 35 stone. She's suffered one rape, one attempted rape, bullying at work and the murder of a close friend. In short, the psychological and emotional effects of a traumatic experience can cause self-abuse, be it over-eating, drug misuse, cutting the body or any number of ways people have of hurting themselves. It can deaden the pain of experience. Over-eating and excessive weight-gain can make the person feel so unattractive that no man is ever going to want to rape them again. Of course rape isn't about desire it's about power but not all women realise that. Please note that I'm not suggesting that this applies to all over-weight people. Just offering it as one possible cause.
