    There are two theories: One is that in Mexico, the locals told U.S. soldiers ‘Green Go Home,’ referring to the green uniforms. Green Go Home was shortened to Green Go, hence ‘gringo’. The other theory is that it is a corruption of the Spanish word for Greek, ‘griego,’ but at one point evolved to ‘gringo.’ The connection with Greek was the fact that foreigners could not be understood, but why they chose Greek is beyond me. Another thing: gringo does not refer to a white person. A black American will also be called a gringo if he or she visits Latin America. A Hispanic born in the States (as myself) is also considered a ‘gringo.’
