Here’s an explanation I’ve heard before: Many African Americans live in poverty. Poverty often creates crowded conditions in housing. In order to be heard in a crowded household, one must be loud. A quiet person would quickly fade into the background in many of these homes. As for the defensiveness, I’m guessing it comes from a lifetime of discrimination and needing to be able to defend one’s decisions and choices. Those are my two cents.
