Those who are wound up in religious bigotry are the ones who have their shorts in a know over the issue. Part of the problem is that there should be two separate terms. Let the religious have ‘marriage’ and others can be content with ‘Civil union’ or some other such term. To say that the institution of marriage is threatened is absure: look at the ‘straight’ divorse rate — nearly 50%. A sacred rite? Don’t make me laugh.
