Racism and priority to topics. The largest (or soon to be largest) minority poluation is hispanic. If you look at most 'national' minority orginization they are primarly black and focused on black issue. I have a relative (hispanic) that works in the Census with US. Black groups FOUGHT against hispanic being lables race or ethnicity seperate, instead all hispanic people (according to the US) are 'white'. By allowing hispanics into the fold and given them equal representation according to population they would weaken thier political voice and message. Thierfor the 'other' minorities are excluded(not overtly but anybody of color knows that you don't need a XXX need not apply to know that you are not welcome). If you question this ask yourself why are asians/hispanic not given the same minority status as black. Those that would declare this as racist, I can back it up with facts.

I am a nurse who has worked in 'nursing homes', To respond to a responder you might be seeing the 'worse' of the society. I can't think of a single 'good' nursing home i would want to be in. So you have a group of people that thier own families didn't want them around either. Also many people feel that with age comes unquestgioned respect. Don't geberalize this behavior to all older people, its the few bad that you remember not the many nice that go un-noticed.

My wife(PhD student) does reseach on 'interatial couples', though lots of research has been done on white/black very little has been done on white/hispanic/black (or include into that asian, but didn't have a pool of asians big enough to test where we live). Point blank it is racism. Racism exist both with a sub-group and population as a whole. So far from the research as latino female you are lucky, almost any of the three races 'on average' will be better viewed then if you were a male crossing racial lines.

Go back 50 years in the US, why did white women feen the need to be married before 30, why do married copies that don't have children by thier 30s ask why? Culture norm in most cases. With the influx of Hispanics into the US thier culture gets a constant update so it does not fade as quickly as many other do. Family values are more predominate, with that family values means you need to have a family, that means women AND men need to get marries and need to have children. But on a whole most cultures still encourage marriage at semi young age (ie before 30 ;) ).

I would like to know why you think you are 'white'. My in-laws think I should be hispanic, but it not becasue of skin, just becasue I 'readily' accpeted and adapted myself to thier culture. I like the hispanic culture (and if being made you I would be) but would never be considered hispanic, though oddly enough all my children will be. You will always be a 'black' male (as i will always be a 'white' male), but don't mistake your race for the culture you choose.
