In the United States many people consider themselves ‘Christian’ because they were born into it and it is the cultural norm. My guess is that the people you encounter aren’t as serious about their religion as you. Why should they be? Because they belong to the protected majority, they must be right. They don’t need to back up their beliefs as long as most people agree with them.
