I had a roommate who had been an adult star, and I have several acquaintances who were strippers, and what most of them had in common was an array of psychological disorders stemming from massive childhood abuse such that they were unable to hold down 'straight' jobs. Someone who is bi-polar (manic depressive) or schizophrenic is going to have a lot of trouble holding a regular job - particularly if they are un-medicated - but in strip clubs (and porn, I suppose) that sort of thing is considered 'normal'. My friend who had been an adult star had quit the adult movie business and stripping several times, but kept going back to it. She really wanted to have a normal job and life but couldn't because of her psychological problems. She needed a job, of course (L.A. is an expensive town). She'd go to the doctor and get put on some medication for bi-polar disorder when she couldn't take it any longer. The meds would help her out - but, the meds are also salt-based, meaning they'd make her put on weight. You can imagine how she felt about that. It didn't help when the club owners would tell her she was getting too fat to work - so then she'd go off the meds. I've read that bi-polar people also go off their meds because they want to hit the manic cycle again because they enjoy it so much - my roommate certainly did. Of course, then there's the inevitable 'crash'. Suffice to say this girl was a very challenging roommate.
