I would recommend you talk to your supervisor. Your black friends may be of some help, but the odds are they are privileged as well. You do not have to act like the people you work with to be accepted. When you are faking, people can pick up on it. Same goes for being genuine.

In the United States, small behinds equal wealth because our lifestyles are conducive to poor health (cars everywhere, cheap and fattening food). It costs money to buy health food and a gym membership. Also, fashion models and actresses are held up as the standard of beauty. Perhaps as technology advances, we expect our bodies (behinds included) to become as sleek as our gadgets. Also, have you ever seen a woman described as having an hourglass figure? The average European woman’s behind is flatter than the average African’s behind, but many European women have small waists and wide hips for childbearing.

The black community is in denial about HIV. Many people do not even know they have it. All of the issues you raised are also factors.

Many politicians who were once Southern Democrats are now Republicans.

I am also darker-skinned. I think that the area you live in and the type of crowd you associate with has an impact. In L.A. I feel that the aesthetic favors living barbie dolls . For blacks this means black barbie dolls. Stay positive, and you will attract good things.

How many African Americans have THEIR REAL LAST NAME? Naming is claiming what is yours, hence Malcom X. Most African Americans cannot even identify with a particular (African) ethnic group, much less a particular nation. So, we cannot identify as Mexican or Askhenazic or Yoruba or Masai. Therefore, the first name has extra signifigance.
