Most black Americans, like most Americans in general, give their children traditional 'American' names. More than likely, the more 'non-traditional', 'extremely unusual names' as you say, are more memorable to you. I'm black and all of my 7 siblings have common American names like Eric, Jane, etc., as with most blacks I know. So we blacks don't all have extremely unusual names. However, there is a trend by many (not most or all) blacks to give their children less 'Euro-centric' names.

Yes, it's sad fact that most non-black American's have no idea what natural female black hair looks like. Many non blacks have little clue what our(like our west african descendents) hair is really like. And no wonder: natural female 'black' hair is rarely shown on TV or in movies. Most 'black' women in hair ads are either mixed race, like Halle B. (therefore with straight(er) hair, or wearing false and/or straightened hair. Black ain't quite beautiful, yet.

Unfortunately, when some prominent blacks speak they are seen as representatives of all black people, i.e, the postmodern left you speak of. Many blacks support and agree with Bill Cosbys statement, some don't (btw, I agree w/Bill, I'm black and consider myself VERY left wing). When children don't do well in school and in their community, often that negative behavior can be traced to the home and parents. I must say, however, I understand how hard constructive critisim is to take when you represent a group of people who are often portrayed and treated as 'losers'.
