Religious leaders pick and choose parts of the Bible because they’re human beings, and it’s human nature to find certain parts of any document more important than other parts. It’s like asking why liberals find the First Amendment to be of the utmost importance while ignoring the Second Amendment. You’re raised a certain way, and in you are certain prejudices, and when you find those prejudices backed up in a holy book, of course that’s what you’re going to tell everyone about. As for God making homosexuals, there’s no scientific proof, first of all, that homosexuality is genetic. There’s some evidence for it, and while I tend to believe in that evidence, it’s certainly far from scientific fact at this point. After that, you have to consider the fact that the Bible never expressly condemns homosexuality, it only condemns the act of homosexual sex. As such, God can be quite pleased with a gay person, as long as he isn’t having sex with another gay person. As for the Bible being written by homophobes, I think that’s an unfair accusation. Certainly there’s no fear of homosexuals expressed in the Bible. I think it unfair to call anyone who disagrees with homosexuality on moral grounds a homophobe. Perhaps the writers of the Bible were trying to follow the ancient dictate of their god to ‘Go forth and multiply.’ Now, there’s something a homosexual in those days couldn’t do.
