Faith is the evidence of things unseen. People put themselves under the spirtual authority of others because they trust and believe that person has the best interests of the church at heart – not unlike the trust people put in their governments. Objectively, what makes any one person better than another to govern? Nothing, except your belief that Person A is better qualified to lead than Person B. Be careful not to confuse doctrine with dogma. A dogma is an absolute truth held by a Church that must be believed by members in order to counted as a member of a Church. Doctrine is a teaching of a Church that arises out of a specific situation, but that may be subject to change if some sort of greater consensual spiritual understanding of Truth comes about. Doctrine may develop and change, Dogma cannot.
