Tom-AParticipantMuch of the Bible was written long after Christ’s death, and religious dogma is still being written today, as is evident by the recent Southern Baptist revision. Why do religious people put faith in the writings of normal people?

Ed-M25551ParticipantFaith is the evidence of things unseen. People put themselves under the spirtual authority of others because they trust and believe that person has the best interests of the church at heart – not unlike the trust people put in their governments. Objectively, what makes any one person better than another to govern? Nothing, except your belief that Person A is better qualified to lead than Person B. Be careful not to confuse doctrine with dogma. A dogma is an absolute truth held by a Church that must be believed by members in order to counted as a member of a Church. Doctrine is a teaching of a Church that arises out of a specific situation, but that may be subject to change if some sort of greater consensual spiritual understanding of Truth comes about. Doctrine may develop and change, Dogma cannot.

VAKParticipantTo respond to what some people have said, Revelations was NOT written by the Apostle John, as many believe. Instead, it was an early christian by the name of John who wrote of visions he had recieved. He wrote these while imprisoned on the isle of Cyprus. In fact, many reknowned biblical scholars believe John never actually met Jesus. So yes, Revelations, the chapter people pay attention to, was written by an ordinary man.
