EdParticipantPeople use ‘gay’, mostly guys, to mean ‘stupid’, because of the image of being gay as being feminine and silly. And according to the male stereotype, being feminine is equivalent to being weak. Think about the stereotype of a ‘flamingly gay’ person, and you get images of someone to be laughed at, someone trivial. It’s the opposite of qualities traditionally associated with men, which are power and dominance. So when something non-sexual is ‘gay’, it’s a synonym for being trivial, nonsensical, or inane, which are the negative qualities males stereotypically associate with females. Actually, if you think about the use of the word ‘stupid’ itself, it’s rarely used to describe things that lack intelligence.

EdParticipantIt’s just a cultural shift, mainly due to the media and advertising. We’re moving towards a culture that just glorifies youth more and more, so that being young means being cool and hip, while being old means being dated and out of touch. Youth just has higher status than age these days. Personally, I think it has to do with advertising. Having worked in an entertainment company that relied on advertising, I know firsthand that young people are the most desired targets for ads. That’s because they have less responsibilities, more disposable income, and are more likely to make impulse purchases. So the media ends up becoming saturated with ads that cater to young people. Young people, seeing everything catering to them, start believing all of it, and think they’re the ones in charge.

EdParticipantBasically it’s to save money. Customer service, by phone or otherwise, is a very labor-intensive process, and thus very expensive. And the way the United States works with minimum wage, health coverage, employees’ right to sue employers, and just the gap in wealth between nations, U.S. workers are very expensive to keep. So basically companies will ship labor-intensive, low-skill jobs overseas to cut costs and improve the bottom line. Customer service is an easy thing to ship, because the employee doesn’t need to be physically present, they just need to pick up the phone. Plus, customer service doesn’t have that big an impact on sales, so while good customer service brings in marginal amounts of repeat business, it drastically increases costs, thus making it very unprofitable for companies to provide quality for the consumer. I know it doesn’t make sense from a consumer side for a job that hinges on communcation skills to be shipped overseas to people who don’t speak English well, but from the corporate side, it means more money for them.

EdParticipantI can’t speak for Japanese people, but I am Asian and our family takes photos just like that, as well as almost every other Asian family that I know. It’s basically to prove that you’ve been there at the particular attraction. First, you want a picture of the attraction, because you may never see it again, and might want to know what it looks like later. Second, you want a picture of yourself with the attraction, because if you only get a picture of the attraction, you could’ve just bought a postcard from anywhere, and can’t prove that you were really there. The whole point being so that many years down the road, you can look at a picture of yourself standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, say ‘See, I’ve been there!’ and check it off your list of things to do in life.

EdParticipantI think that some people are natural born jerks. They’re jerks their whole lives, and when the get old they just become old jerks. Only when they get old, they just don’t care anymore, and completely cut loose with their jerkness. So the old people who are really jerks tend to be more vocal than jerks of other generations, and that gives the perception that old people in general must be jerkier than normal.

EdParticipantHaving lived in the northeast (NJ), south (NC), and CA Bay Area in that order, I can say that: Northeast: People are generally more uptight, competitive, and worry about everything. Anything which goes wrong, even the smallest thing, seems to set people off. People are more honest with their opinions though, they don’t have time to BS unless they’re trying to intentionally trick you, which happens a lot. Actually, they don’t have time for much of anything, they’re always in a hurry. The only part of the country where they boo their own sports teams. That has to say something. South: It’s slow, and sometimes ass-backwards. People either go from being incredibly polite to outright rude. Some of the nicest people I’ve ever met were from the South. But there are lots of Southerners who just can’t stand outsiders. There’s definitely an anti-elitist feeling in the area, which is how Southerners view Yankees. It’s sad that the disdain for elitism often extends to hallmarks like education or cultural awareness, as if being ignorant is somehow equated with being honest and down-to-earth. People eat entirely too much saturated fat down here… CA, Bay Area – Very, very ethnically diverse. White people are definitely in the minority. Huge Asian and Latino influences. Very image conscious, very into politcal correctness and pseudo intellectualism. But I’ve seen more race mixing here than anywhere else, there’s so much diversity race is *almost* an afterthought. Somewhat friendlier than the northeast. Great place for food, you can get anything you want except NY style pizza (and I’ve looked all over). Very health conscious – only place in the world where a place can charge $5 for an all-natural fruit smoothie, and sell ’em like hotcakes.

EdParticipantWell, I’m originally from New Jersey, but live in California now. I’m kind of biased but I consider the Midwest to be anything west of Philadelphia and east of LA. I don’t even count Pittsburgh. I spent a summer up in Saginaw, Michigan, which I don’t know if you consider it to be the Midwest, but I do. Like anywhere else, you’ve got a mix of personality types (not just ‘easy going farm folk’), but comparing the population in general with folks from the east and west coasts, I have to say Midwesterners are generally nicer, more honest people. I got chat up by strangers pretty often, which never happens in New Jersey and rarely in California where I live. People are more trusting and a little easier going. St. Louis may be different, considering it’s a larger city. But on the other hand, being Asian I often got a lot of funny looks walking into restaurants and shops. People didn’t know how to approach me, as if I didn’t speak English. And of course, the first question they ask is ‘What are you? Chinese? Japanese?’. It’s all innocent, but makes me think they are culturally sheltered. Oh, and the food is kind of bland and lacks variety. I think I prefer cities more, just because I need a certain amount of chaos to feel at home. Call me crazy. But the Midwest gets props because I think it just has a better overall sense of ethics.

EdParticipantIf you think Asians don’t litter, you need to visit Taiwan! I once saw a guy hold one nostril closed, then blow the ‘contents’ of the other nostril out on the sidewalk. Disgusting. You’re from the Northeast, and in the US, the Asians in the Northeast tend to be upper middle class (unles you’re in NY’s Chinatown), and won’t be as likely to litter. But when you start getting into the lower income areas, the trash builds up. Trash is just a part of low income people.

EdParticipantIf you’ve lived on the East Coast, you’ll probably see a higher percentage of Asian women with white men. That’s just cause 1) of all the possible available men, most of them are white, so you’re bound to get more interracial dating and 2) East Coast Asians tend to assimilate and adopt white culture much more than West Coast Asians. When you adopt more white culture, white then becomes more ‘normal’ and thus acceptable for dating. Having lived on both coasts, I see that on the West Coast Asians are a much greater percentage of the population, and retain more of their Asian culture. So Asian women tend to think of Asian men as more ‘normal’ if they live in a majority Asian community.

EdParticipantI think other races in general view black males as being hypermasculine, and thus feel insecure about their own masculinity when around them. Particularly when it comes to the idea that black men have bigger penises, which I don’t even know if it’s true or not. It goes back to old stereotypes about black men being overaggressive and brutish, which are traditionally masculine traits. Misguided, but old stereotypes die hard.

EdParticipantI think that it’s not the fact that they work there, but recent immigrants are more inclined to buy those franchises. Those 7-11’s and Dunkin’ Donuts you’re looking at are probably owned by a family of Middle Easterners, and the staff is made up of friends and relatives. They come here with the intention of owning a business, and a franchise is the simplest way to do it. I’m Chinese, and I know that Chinese people tend to favor restaurants and little gift shops when they come here to start a business. I guess Middle Easterners, for whatever cultural reason, have a stereotype of a typical American business as being a 7-11 or Dunkin’ Donuts.

EdParticipantI’m Chinese-American, and I think maybe you feel white’s faces are more beautiful than Asian faces because white facial features tend to be more pronounced and exaggerated compared with Asian facial features. If you are living in China, and are looking at Chinese all the time, white people can look very striking and different. Chinese will look very plain in comparison. Especially if you are looking at TV or magazines, as those white people are most likely models or actors, and better looking than the general population! But if you live in America, and are used to seeing all kinds of faces, you’ll see that what you think of as ‘plain’ Asian faces are exotic and different by other races’ standards. So it all depends on your point of view.

EdParticipantThey’re just doing it to keep their conversation private. They’re not necessarily talking about you, or saying anything bad, it just makes them feel more secure in case they say something embarrassing. It’s the same thing if you were talking to someone in a loud voice, then someone else you didn’t know walked by, and you lowered your voice so as to keep your own ‘space’.
