DavidParticipantI’ve found just the opposite to be true. I’m a straight and effeminate guy and it seems like it’s worked against me. I’ve always thought that it was an advantage because I feel I’m able to relate to and care for women a lot better than the more masculine types, but all it’s gotton me is a big tattoo on my forehead that says ‘Platonic’. I think women prefer their men to be manly, like the policeman/fireman kind, especially now that they’re looked at as ‘heroes’. They don’t want to be with a wuss.

DavidParticipantI think men get discriminated more because, like Sammy said, it’s assumed to be a man’s world. We’re supposed to be in power, and with the age of feminism, we’re probably viewed as obstacles, or the ‘enemy.’ At the same time, men most likely feel they HAVE to be powerful and successful because there is this idea of a man’s world. If a man doesn’t have opportunities to become successful and ends up in what feels like a powerless situation, he’s looked down upon. Also, women can use their gender in their defense when a man can’t (e.g. sexual discrimination), and I’m sure there are a far greater number of male-bashing women than there are female-bashing men.

DavidParticipantWhat I find is the most common reason for guys to hold back on talking to a pretty girl is the old ‘She’s so pretty, she’s GOT to have a boyfriend’ line. I’ve often joked myself about how a lot of pretty girls are born taken. What’s the point in talking to someone you’re interested in if there’s no chance you’d get anywhere? Another reason would be the fear of saying something stupid and having the girl laugh in his face. After finally building up the confidence, no guy wants to have it all be lost by saying the wrong thing.
