From my observations, black kids who act ‘white’ are seen as deviating from their own kind, and for choosing ‘white’ as being preferrable to ‘black.’ In the case of white kids acting ‘black’, they are seen as trying to be something they’re not. A kid who grows up in a polished upper-middle class suburb is certainly not going to be speaking Ebonics and walking with a strut from early childhood. However, there used to be this one guy up the street from me named Sam. He’s a white guy but he grew up in Harlem, and I guess he managed to fit in because he had black mannerisms and style. When he came over here he fit right in with all the black kids at my old school.
