I believe it is for three reasons: 1) Most American women would be ashamed to have to resort to a mail order service to find a husband – most would think it pathetic. 2) Most men do not want to be in the “one down” position that being a mail order husband would entail. 3) Of the pool of “excess” men (read poor, Third World men) that would comprise the majority of mail order husbands, most neither have the skills needed to find a job here nor the values and attitudes toward women that would make them good husbands for the majority of women here.

I am in the same position as you (working toward my four-year degree) and I would have to say my findings are the same: Educated automatically is assumed to equal smart, and no degree is automatically assumed to equal less smart. I think people make assumptions based on surface knowledge without bothering to get to know the individual, out of laziness and indifference. Fortunately, at my age I have ceased to care what most people think of me.

In most cases I think it is sheer laziness, carelessness and the assumption that “someone else” (i.e. the store employees) will come along and put the carts where they belong. I always wheel my cart back to the store, for the reason you described – safety, not to mention consideration.

There are not necessarily more lesbian and bisexual women around now than there were in the past. Remember that in bygone days, heterosexuality was more or less “compulsory”; there were few options for women outside of (heterosexual) marriage. Women these days have the option to express their true sexual nature, which may well be lesbian or bisexual, at least for part of their lives. Add to this the fact that apparently everyone and their sister wants to be on a talk show, another recent phenomenon.

I cannot speak for all vegetarians, but I am not any more offended by ersatz “meat” than I am by fake fur. Meat substitutes are a great way to satisfy one’s cravings for meat without having to eat the real thing.
