The whole ebonics thing was blown entirely out of proportion by people who mistakenly thought that it was about teaching bad english. Actually, it was supposed to be a method of teaching standard English to kids who already have highly developed language skills. However, these kids speak a variant of English so far from standard English that it might as well be a foreign language. Instead of approaching it like it’s bad English that needs to be corrected, we need to treat the student like we would teach a French student whose French happens to be very good but doesn’t know much English. You don’t ask them to forget their natural language; you just teach English to them like they never heard it before.
