Hello, Sam. I’m not a doctor, etc., and so on, and no one can diagnose someone over the Internet. However, there is a very small possibility that you might be a member of an apparently rapidly growing population….those of us on the ‘autistic spectrum’. This includes not only autism, but Asperger Syndrome (such as myself) plus other lesser known syndromes. This is not the *only* possible explanation for your situation, but it is one of the many. You might be interested in looking into the ASSN, Asperger Syndrome Support network, which has a forum that I frequent. http://www.asperger.asn.au/ It’s based in Australia. By the way, in answer to the other respondent, if someone is on the spectrum, simply ‘having the courage’ to open up is not an option. Spectrum disorders are brain disorders…you can’t just overcome them by gritting your teeth.

Hello, Derek. I am not a doctor, and no one can be diagnosed over the Internet. I, too, see some similarities with high-functioning autism and/or Asperger Syndrome (both autistic spectrum disorders, but not identical) in your description. Even if you were not on the spectrum, I suspect you might find a lot of helpful information researching the syndrome and reading up on how autistics feel and the strategies they use in trying to get along with non-spectrum people. You might look up the books by Dr. Temple Grandin (a diagnosed high-functioning autistic) ‘Emergence: Labeled Autistic’ and ‘Thinking in Pictures’, as well as the last chapter (about Dr. Gandin) in Oliver Sacks’ book ‘An Anthropologist on Mars’. (Dr. Grandin thinks of herself as being from Mars and being an observer of human behavior from the point of view of an alien.)

Hello, Josh. No, I don’t think this is common in the general population, but it is a very common phenomenon among people with autistic spectrum disorders, including autism, both low- and high-functioning, and Asperger Syndrome, which I have. When I was born in 1951, the estimated 10,000 in the general population. Since 1990, the incidence has skyrocketed to one in 300, with one in 150 in Silicon Valley. No one has an explanation of why this is happening. Suppressing emotions is usually thought of by the psychiatric community as being unhealthy, but the same may not be true for spectrum individuals, as it may be a ‘self-protective’ behavior for them instead.
