The problem is that, as with a lot of other situations, the most extreme ones are the most visible ones. There are an awful lot of Christians who are not intolerant, who are not hardcore creationists, who don’t have strong prejudices — the problem is that they are pretty invisible in day-to-day life! The ones that DO have strong prejudices or extremist beliefs, on the other hand, are easy to see and pick out, and therefore it seems like there are many of them and few of the others.

It’s impossible to make a blanket statement like that. I personally as a lesbian wouldn’t hit on a woman unless I had at least a decently good idea that she had some attraction toward women too, just to spare myself the embarrassment, but that is my own personal preference. Some women might hit on anyone they find attractive.

To me, it seems like a major part of the reason that the US makes Christian holidays official is that the large majority of the country is Christian. If there will be specific days when 86% of the country is going to say “It’s a holy day for me, I’m not coming in to work” then you might as well give everyone the day off work, because the remaining 14% aren’t going to get much done. So really, I don’t think it’s necessary or particularly practical for the entire country to have a national holiday based on the holy days of a group that is not a significant percentage of the population. If there is a particular area that, say, has a very high concentration of Muslims (as I’m aware that some towns in the USA do) then it makes sense for them to have local days off based on Muslim holidays

You might want to brush up on your Bible. There are a total of two citations that dismiss homosexuality as wrong — and one is in Leviticus, tucked in with the laws on kosher, animal sacrifice, and other matters of ritual purity and impurity which are generally agreed not to apply to Christians, thanks to Jesus’ coming. There is only ONE Biblical injunction against homosexuality that applies to Christians, and that is in writings that are typically attributed to Paul, although from what I understand most Bible scholars agree that it was written by a follower of Paul’s using his name.
