Many non-Christians perceive Christians to be intolerant. There has been a history of justifying prejudice (against women, racial minorities, interracial relationships, and homosexuality) through Scriptural interpretation despite evidence. Do Christians not recognize this pattern? Do they ignore scientific evidence and case studies because it threatens their core beliefs? some people are intolerant for no real reason. this can be from cultural folkways or in some cases *iran* because of mores. people can justify the hatred they feel through the scriptures of leviticus, the line forbidding men to love eachother. this line in the bible continues to say other rules that restrict what to wear, eat and how to live.

Most educated Christians comprehend that the world comes in many different flavors and colors and that you can't just block out things that make you nervous. It is the poorer, less worldly Christians who make everyone else look bad with their intolerance. My feeling is that most bigotry is class related and geographical rather than directly related to Christianity (although there are certainly pastor agitators who stir people up for political reasons). I am not a Christian but I think most Christians are "normal", rational people with at least some common sense.

The problem is that, as with a lot of other situations, the most extreme ones are the most visible ones. There are an awful lot of Christians who are not intolerant, who are not hardcore creationists, who don't have strong prejudices -- the problem is that they are pretty invisible in day-to-day life! The ones that DO have strong prejudices or extremist beliefs, on the other hand, are easy to see and pick out, and therefore it seems like there are many of them and few of the others.
