A.N.ParticipantIt’s impossible to get a valid statistical analysis on bisexuals – or gays, for that matter. This is because there are so many of them who haven’t accepted it, and therefore refuse to tell anyone. I believe many people are bisexual. I think sexuality is a continuum, and most people who are more attracted to members of the opposite sex tend to ignore their gay tendencies due to societal pressures. If the true were known, I believe the majority of people are not straight but bisexual.

A.N.ParticipantGreg, I think you’re a bit off the mark here. Although you’re right when you say that black people are obviously more easily targeted; therefore, they are, in that sense, more apt to discrimination. Black people are black b/c who they are, AND gay people are gay b/c who they are, also. This is not a choice. The only choice one must face is the choice to come out and be true to yourself and your loved ones. Furthermore, discrimination against gays comes in two levels…that which happens before one comes out (which negates them being true to themself at all) and that which happens after one comes out and identifies him/herself as a homosexual. Gay discrimination throughout the years is much more apparent than anyone knows. They are just recently starting to keep records and track anti-gay discrimination, suggesting millions of crimes that went unrecorded. Many similar crimes also go unreported due to a need for privacy. Some parts of the world still order the execution of homosexuals. Also, the inclusion of gays in the holocaust is often forgotten. Systematic means to keep gays in their place??…discrimination in housing, adoption, employment. And people wonder why we have places like the Castro and Greenwich Village.

A.N.ParticipantOK..I’m sorry; I don’t quite understand your reply. You contradict yourself saying first that ‘the man does not feel threatened’ and then saying that gay men are just a threat to straight men altogether. What exactly is the threat here? Gay men do not like women sexually and do not have the ability to love women like straight men; therefore, a gay man-straight woman relationship is essentially the same as two straight women being friends. Also, your statement that ‘it’s just a man thing’ to discriminate and hate gays is very disturbing. I’m sure this statement would offend many straight men. My advice would be to mature a little and get to know some gay guys; we’re all not as different as you think.

A.N.ParticipantIt used to really hurt me and make me angry to hear others’ feeling about my being gay. However, I soon got over my ‘angry stage’. You just have to realize that it all stems from hatred and ignorance. When confronted with anti-gay rhetoric, I always ask myself if saying or doing something will benefit the situation. I, also, have to think about potential violence. All I can do is to live my life truthfully. Trying to enlighten EVERYONE on homosexuality is impossible and doing so would cause absolute misery. I feel lucky to have enlightened the many people I have…mostly friends and family.

A.N.ParticipantAlthough theories indicate that homosexuality is inbred, no one really knows the origins of sexuality – gay, straight or bisexual. Also, not all gay people enjoy anal sex and/or fisting; however, most of us like it for the same reasons straight people like intercourse and blow jobs. It’s called sex, and it’s how we express love to our partner. And frankly, it feels good.

A.N.ParticipantGelong: You have a major chip on your shoulder. You’re overlooking the barriers that many others face with your ‘woe is me’ attitude. Your generalization of all white people benefiting from their ancestors’ stupidity borders on racism, and certainly does not apply to all white people. I do feel ashamed and embarassed at the actions of my ancestors, but that is out of my control, and the only thing I can do is try to be as open-minded and understanding as possible. I am a sexual minority; however, that does not prevent me from emphathizing with other minorities and their struggles to find success and happiness. By the way, some obesity is genetic just like your skin color and my sexual orientation.

A.N.ParticipantOne of the main pathways to success is access to quality education. That said, education in Asia is among the most vigorous and respected anywhere. They take it very seriously. This discipline is continued by Asian Americans in the USA. Simply put, this is why Asian Americans have become so successful in our country. Asians have used their education to rise above and beyond the barriers of racism. Other oppressed groups are not as fortunate to have access to such quality education. With a little research, it is apparent that racism (especially institutionalized) is still very alive in America.

A.N.ParticipantThe pride days that you are referring to are celebrations of freedom and accomplishment. The different groups that put these on have made huge progress in the way of gaining rights and freedom through tireless efforts of social movement. Enjoying and celebrating your white race is not a bad thing; however, to be frank, the white race was and is still perceived to be the powerful race that has had to overcome the least amount of discrimination and oppression when compared to other groups. Furthermore, it seems that groups that attempt to celebrate ‘white pride’ have negative and often racist motives.

A.N.ParticipantThe majority of gay people I meet act in the manner members of their gender stereotypically conduct themselves. Gay people act certain ways for different reasons. It always helps to think that for every ‘feminine-acting’ gay male you meet, there are loads of ‘masculine-acting’ gays.

A.N.ParticipantI have spent my entire life up until now deep in the Midwest (Kansas). There are exceptions, but in general, people are set in their ways, without much interest in new things, art, theatre, different cultures, etc. I am forever grateful for having the opportunity to attend a fine and respected university in a nice, liberal-minded city – which, I might add, is an oasis in an otherwise stuffy conservative Christian environment. It opened my eyes up to a variety of beautiful things that I would never have been able to experience in small town Kansas. I am definitely a better person for it. The stereotype that is spoken of is especially pertinent in rural areas of the Midwest. For the most part, they are uncultured when it comes to mainstream culture. Religion tends to rule the day; this affects everything from morals to political ideologies. As for boring, hmm … I do know quite a few Midwestern characters, so that may be an unfair judgment.
In summary, my experience has shown me that Midwesterners are some of the happiest and friendliest people in the country. They should not be looked down upon just because they don’t long for the cultural advancement and diversity that I do.

A.N.ParticipantI agree with most of the attitudes expressed above. The inability to accept differences not only in high school but in life is a huge factor in many situations. This lack of respect leads to things like homophobia, racism and anti-Semitism. Columbine was terrible. I felt for those killed and their families, but at the same time, I felt for the killers and their families. There is only a certain amount of torture and humiliation a person can experience before that rage explodes, many times in the form of violence. Until America accepts the fact that this is a legitimate problem and stops telling their children they’re one of the gifted ones, such problems will continue. Celebrate diversity.
