Honeslty, why in the world does the government think they have ANY right to tell the citizens who they can and cannot marry? As long as they are consenting adults, there should be nothing standing in the way. And why is being gay considered ‘wrong’ or ‘enethical,’ anyway? In my opinion, it’s about loving someone who loves you back. And being happy. I’m straight, and I’ve been in too many relatinships where I’m treated like a piece of shit, cheated on, etc. People who oppose gay marriage are bigots, pure and simple. And most of them probably have shitty relationships that they don’t want to have to focus on, so they have to scream about this. I say stay out of it. It’s not your business.

First of all, I take umbrage with the notion the marriage simply involves ‘obtaining a piece of paper’. Now, neither side in this issue would admit that that is what they believe, but both sides (same-sex marriage advocates and opponents) act as if they believe that marriage is a governmentally based institution, in that they place such high importance on this issue. Personally, I believe that everyone should have access to whatever civil rights marraige grants (in the form of ‘civil unions’), but I would be happy if the secular state stayed out of marriage altogther and left it entirely to the churches and, perhaps, secular private institutions. Aside from prosaic civil right (as in inheritance, taxes, etc.), it is irrelevant whether the state starts marrying gays, because, in my opinion, it has no right to marry (in the social and spiritual sense of the term) anybody in the first place.

Wow! I didn’t realize Yforum was back up and running. But when I saw some of the messages related to same-sex marriage, I wished I hadn’t accessed the page. The responses made it quite clear to me why I go to Scandinavia every summer for 4 or more weeks and why I will eventually leave these good ol’ New-nited States.

The problem is a mixture of the culture in which one is raised and the tendency of people to be ‘lemmings’. I once dated a guy who swore that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to take over the United States so he could throw all the white people out. Why did he believe this? Because ‘his daddy told him so’. He wouldn’t even read the ‘I have a dream’ speach that I placed in front of him. When you take into account the vast number of people willing to believe anything because ‘my daddy told me so’ or ‘my pastor told me so’ or ‘my teacher told me so’, you can begin to understand where the problem is coming from.

I am a married with children straight man. But, I find it repulsive to think that there are people out there who lump drunk drivers in with gay marriage? Drunk driving is not illegal because some group thinks it is immoral. It is illeagl because drunk drivers kill other people. Two gay or lesbian people marrying will not hurt anyone else. I wish people would move beyond their judgemental and ignorant views of people who are different. I hope this board helps in that, I think it will.

Marriage is a holy sacrament, tradition, passed on for centuries. It centers around God, and for someone to toy with that is what scares people. I have nothing against a gay couple living together, but to conjoin in matromony under God is something I think shouldn’t be done.

Maybe not marriage, but they should be able to have some kind of official union. I am a Health insurance agent, it is not fair that you see these couples that are same sex and one has wonderful Health insurance an the other partner lives at home or is an artist or what ever, and I have to help them get inusurance cause they can not get on their partners. Same sex unions are not just thrown togather over nite people they love and care for each other just like us hetero’s. Plus they don’t seperate like we do, there quote unquote divorce rate is better than ours. Don’t call it marriage but they diserve the right to be official under the goverment which they pay their taxes.

It’s probably possible to cram more ignorance and bigotry into a paragraph than Cece did—but I doubt it. It’s pointless to argue with this kind of blind prejudice. The ‘choice’ garbage, the calculated insult of equating being gay with alcholism (straight from the nutty ring-wing playbook)…Cece’s deeply disturbed. Let her be…
