I don't have an answer for your question, but I am truly amazed that you actually tested your theory. This must be a huge concern for you. Anyway, I would love to hear more about your testing methods. Did you make sure there were only blacks in one theater and only whites in the other, or did you allow one or two people to mix in? Sorry, it just seems incredibly ridiculous to me that you went to such lengths.

I have gone to movie theaters in both white and black neighborhoods and it occurs in both. The only connection that I have noticed on this issue is age not race. It tends to happen when at a theater where there are a lot of young people.

I believe that it's a matter of parenting and social class. regards, bj

My town of Upper Darby boarders Philly so I can see some truth in that. If I go to the movies in the suburbs its more quiet than if I were to go to the 69th street theater.

So it`s just natural for some big mouth Sunday Christian to reach out and annoy somebody in a theater!

Did you go to an theater that seemed extremely unprofessionsal and laid back thus promoting more of a carefree and expressive atmosphere? I go to the movies all the time and only see African Americans yelling at the movie screen when around more of a younger crowd (i.e teenagers). I rarely see this type of behavior and the majority of people at the theater I go to are African American. Also, I don't see only young AA but also other young ethnic groups as well, including whites taling loud and yelling at the scream. So I guess I didn't really answer your question. I just feel that some people can be disrespectful but some may think that it's cool especially if they have a crowd to give them attention. I hate this stereotype especially since I know that it doesn't represent a significant number of African Americans.

If you have ever been to a Black church, you know that at a certain point in the pastor's sermon, the crowd starts to get a little worked up. the pastor says something significant and the church responds. the response may be a nod but more than likely it will be a resounding 'Amen'. As the pastor gets deeper and deeper into his sermon, the pace and the amplitude of the responses increase. so we are used to responding from stimulus coming from the4 pulpit. think of the screen as a type of pulpit. we are just used to responding out loud to what is coming from the preacher or the movie. Or it may be a comedian at a comedy show. Conversely, I have noticed, like you, that white folks tend not to respond to the preacher or the comic or movies in this way. Maybe the old tradition of 'Call and Response' which is a part of the Black psyche in this country is the reason why. I hope this helps.

Maybe it's just you. There've been plenty of times when there were drunk whites in there trying to mess up the movie for everybody.

Like talk shows have you ever watched them, when confronted with an offensive situation they talk over the host, or others, and yell and cuss. I think it has a lot to do with pop culture.

However, in most communities there is a definite difference in the way blacks and whites express themselves... For instance, the majority of black churchers are much more expressive than their white counterparts...in most cases blacks tend to be more participatory, while whites appear to be a little more removed. You could chalk it up to experience I guess...but remember, I don't represent all black people...and sometimes one shouldn't group all black people together - just because we may share a skin color doesn't mean we share the same culture.

I am a black male, and neither I nor any of my friends yell at the movie screen. However, I have noticed other blacks yelling and talking during movies. On the other hand, I have also observed lower-income whites doing the same thing. I have never seen middle- or upper-middle class blacks or whites participating in the behavior you described at movie theaters. It is lower-income blacks and whites alike.

They seem to laugh louder and be upset louder. I think whites are raised to be ashamed of our emotions or keep them under wraps. Blacks are just more open about how they feel. Think about black churches: Very joyous, emotional and yes, loud.

It wasn't necessary to see this movie in 3 locations. This is a rumor/stereotype that is 100% true. Now it isn't ALL black people that fall in this category, but enough to know that you don't go to a theater in a black area if you REALLY want to see a movie. Even Eddie Murphy made a joke of this in 'Delirious'. Some blacks may get offended by you asking such a question, but take it from me, THIS ONE IS TRUE! If you want to see a good movie on its opening weekend, STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM BLACK THEATERS!
