Slaves stayed with their "masters" after slavery partially because many of their "masters" were also their FATHERS. Many stayed because after slavery, there were not that many, esp. in south, that were happy slavery had ended. They would make it their business to constantly harass freed slaves that left the plantation and tried to start their own "homestead". They would frequently burn down their houses, beat the men, rape the women, and so on. So it was MUCH safer to stay on the plantation...there they only had the overseer or master to worry about, not the hundreds of poor whites that resented the freedmen and would do them harm (and never be punished or prosecuted for it).Trust me, it was NOT because they " didnt want to try to learn something new".
