Although I am not Japanese, I find the word Jap very offensive. World War II propaganda was used to degrade and humiliate Japanese people, and shortening Japanese to 'Jap' was part of that process. A name is a source of pride for most people. It is who you are. Racist movements have long altered or shortened the name of a race to promote their agendas. For example, going from Jewish to 'Jew' or using 'Injin' for Native Americans. It is difficult to understand for a lot of people, unless your own race has been attacked in a similiar way.

Being Jewish can be 3 different things. You can be Jewish by faith, Jewish by race, and Jewish by faith and race. 1. I can be an Asian person but Jewish by faith. 2. I can be Jewish by race/culture. For example, I am from Israel and practice all of the cultural dynamics (language, food, dance etc) 3. I can be Jewish by race and faith which incorporates both #1 and #2. Being Jewish is different from most religious groups because biblically Jewish people are an ethinic group. This is different from let's say Baptist because 'Babtist' are not an ethnic group. Tanya

The word mulatto was used in the time of slavery in the south referring to those who are biracial (black and white.) It is very offensive. It was a word used to single biracial people out and divide black people using the color of their skin. The word mulatto can stir up so many deep rooted feeling and emotions centered around racism and slavery that it should just never be used.

Wearing glasses in the US is slowing becoming a fashion trend; however, in Asian cultures wearing glasses has long been fashionable. Growing up wearing glasses in the US I was teased. But in Korea, where my mother is from, glasses are very common for everyone. In fact, I still buy my glasses frames from Korea because they have a larger selection and the latest styles. I don't think Asians have poorer eyesight than others per say but more people choose to wear glasses than contacts.
