as a light-skinned euro-american, i must say i have never thought that. in truth, many ‘white’ people i talk to express envy and/or admiration of (what they perceive as) african or african-american looks, be it hair, skin, clothing, style, etc. obviously many ‘white’ people hold a superior attitude towards those around them, and i find this confusing. how boring for all of us to look the same! having pale skin and straight hair is okay, but not intrinsically or automatically appealing to me or to most of my ‘white’ friends. at least within the circles i move in, i have seen a fair number of white people trying to ‘dread’ their hair (with what i feel are often disappointing results). but maybe that’s just the circles i tend to move in.
