You are experiencing nothing other than outright religious persecution – one of the reasons this country exists in the first place. Most of we ‘unfundamentalists’ are hated and face abuse from the fundamentalists. But, as we know, it will all sort itself all out in the end. Not that this will be very effective, but your son could say back to those who are persecuting him, ‘what would Jesus do?’ This stops some fundies in their tracks. However, some still have the misguided notion, despite all evidence in the Gospels, that Jesus would act that way. We know that Jesus would most likely give these persecutors a pretty vicious wedgie. He still might, someday. I’ve never heard of a ‘Nazerite vow’ and suspect it’s a dubious misuse of some actual historical information. The Bible itself gives a lot of proof that Jesus drank wine. Jesus’ first documented miracle was creating wine from water at a wedding party before he started his ministry. Jesus also says at one point that he’s been accused of being a drunkard: ‘The Son of man has come eating and drinking; and you say, ‘Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ – Luke 7:34 So, clearly, Jesus drank wine. This denomination will also try to claim that ‘wine’ in the Bible is really grape juice, or ‘New Wine.’ This is patently false. ‘Wine’ in the Bible means the same thing as it does now, and this distinction is even made in the Bible: ‘he must abstain from wine and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar made from wine or from other fermented drink. He must not drink grape juice or eat grapes or raisins.’ – Numbers 6:3 If your child is being physically attacked by these people, you can go to the police and his school and take legal action. It probably won’t be effective at first, but once money starts leaving people’s bank accounts over something like this, change typically occurs. Also, perhaps your church would do some sort of community awareness thing, such as public meetings or editorials in the local paper. Good luck!
