After living in a racially mixed lower-middle to middle class neighborhood for six years, I found that my black neighbors detested the ‘bad guys.’ (It seemed that we had more than our fair share of ‘bad guys’ living in our neighborhood) More often than not, the bad guys were black but what irked my neighbors more was that there was always a chance that their homes could be broken into; or they could get hit by a stray bullet while running errands. And that the police did not always respond in a timely manner. Most of my neighbors I was close to did not have the ‘down with the white man’ mentality, though. Being a white male I did not often have a chance to speak with people who were racially-biased.
