Warren EckelsMemberAnecdotally, there are stories of ‘rich kids slumming’ which I cannot verify. I don’t think poor people are less ‘real’ than others, but neither do I think they are more ‘real’. However, some middle-class people were poor, and while not eager to return to poverty, they credit it for the better sides of their nature or keeping them out of credit-card debt. I think poor people tend to experience more jarring and unpleasant things than the rest of us, and perhaps ‘the school of hard knocks’ imparts valuable lessons. Too often, though, its students never graduate.

Unfortunately, that change included the departure of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Attendance at Bulls games fell dramatically. Perhaps it should be kept in mind that Larry Byrd owns a car dealership in Martinsville, Indiana, a town not known for racial comity. It would not surprise me if he received that comment regularly and often from his customers.

(It should also be kept in mind that there is no one standard ‘Latino’ or ‘white’ accent!) I taught ESL in Indiana, and one evening a new student dropped in, wanting to purge his accent. He wanted to be a lawyer, and was afraid that jurors would look down on his arguments if not presented in perfect English. There is an element of prejudice/racism in that sometimes Americans will assume that people who speak with an accent are less intelligent. I use both words, since I know a woman whose complained that her husband ridiculed her accent even though both are Latino. There is also, perhaps, a desire by the speaker to be understood in the country where he is located. Misunderstandings, even by two well-meaning people, can be inconvenient. (Certainly I’d want to lisp the z in ‘corazón’ in Madrid but not in Guadalajara!)
