It's because St. Augustine was one hell of a sinner before he found God, and he decided that women were the cause of his sinning. His influence got them demoted within the church, caused priests to be (theoretically, anyway) celibate and started the whole idea of sex being much less than holy, but necessary for procreation only. How profoundly our world has been changed by people with issues.
