TrudyParticipantCommissioned officers (Lieutenant or higher in the Army, Air Force and Marines, Ensign or higher in the Navy) are referred to as sir or ma’am. Except for generals and admirals. They are referred to as general or admiral. Non-commissioned officers are generally not referred to as sir or ma’am within the military. Since you are a civillian, you do not have to adhere rigidly to these rules. My basic advice would be to call people what they wish to be called.
