TomerMemberI’ve never heard of Jews being scared of pork. Jews aren’t supposed to EAT pork, but the idea of wearing three layers of gloves is as ludicrous to me as it is ridiculous to you. Muslims on the other hand, from what I’ve heard, specifically, almost pathologically, avoid all contact with animals that the quran calls ‘unclean’, specifically, pigs, dogs and monkeys. (This is also where the Muslim denigration of non-Muslims as ‘sons of dogs, pigs and monkeys’ presumably comes from.) The upside of this, as the stories I’ve heard from a friend who grew up in Singapore, surrounded as a skinny little Buddhist kid, by Muslim and Hindu bullies, is that the Muslim bullies would run in terror if he would come at them carrying pork (and the Hindus would supposedly similarly recoil from beef). I have also heard that Muslims, especially Arab Muslims in the Middle East, are terrified of dogs.

TomerMemberJewish means ‘related to or pertaining to Jews’. Hebrew is a language, the language in which (most of) the (Jewish) Bible is written. Some people assume that Hebrew is synonymous with the word Israelite, i.e. a descendant of Israel (Jacob), or one of the many people who left Egypt with them. The problem is that this association, in English, carries with it connotations that are Christian. (Altho many in the Reform movement in the 1800s and later, adopted the appelation ‘Hebrew’ in order to shuck off the ‘negative connotations of being called a Jew’, this has now almost completely petered out. There are remnants, but now even the Reform Movement’s synagogue arm, once called the Union of American Hebrew Congregations has renamed itself the Union for Reform Judaism or something like that.) Jewish (‘Yehudi’) technically means, ‘descenant or resident of Judah (‘Yehuda’)’. After the Babylonian Exile, the returnees to Jlem, regardless of ‘tribe’, were referred to as ‘Jews’, only secondarily by their actual ‘tribe’. Anyways, ‘Jewish Food’. So anyways, what is ‘Jewish’ food. Jewish food is far more a preparation specific term than any specific ethnic identification. Howso? Judaism proscribes the consumption of certain things that other nations regard as ‘food’, and also proscribes certain combinations of foods that even Judaism regards as fit for consumption. Probably the most well-known prohibition is against the consumption of pork and shellfish. In food preparation, tho, a more important consideration is the prohibition against mixing red meat and dairy products. Out of this single prohibition have developed a host of foods that were once regarded as ‘Jewish’, although in the US especially, they’ve long since become regarded as American. Among these are such things as carrot cake, as well as all the other cakes that are made with shortening instead of butter or other dairy products. Why? So that they can be served as dessert after a meat meal. Bagels are actually an eastern European bread. What makes a bagel and cream cheese ‘Jewish’ is that instead of smearing them with lard (*shudder*), the Jews spread them with cream cheese or sour cream or a host of other kosher (fit (for consumption)) spreads. So, the foods purchased at a hadassah fundraiser are presumably KOSHER, but to describe them as ‘Jewish’ or ‘Hebrew’ is erroneous. They’re best described as ‘acceptable (according to Jewish dietary law, for Jews) to eat’

TomerMemberThe rampant mistreatment of Jews by the Romans is well portrayed by the brutality they wreaked on Jesus. What is not shown is that Jesus was only one of over half a million Jews killed by the Romans just as brutally. The rubbish about the sneering priests in the movie is par for the course, and actually rather tame compared to the libels against Jews seen in Passion plays throughout the US only 35 years ago. All in all, the hubbub about the movie’s (and Mel Gibson’s) anti-semitism was mostly just hype that made all Jews look like fearmongering whiners (thanks a lot, Abe Foxman, you did it again), and did a great job of promoting the movie. The people who should REALLY be upset about this movie are children’s rights advocates, who should have loudly protested people (otherwise devout Christians) taking their kids to see what amounted to nothing more than a snuff film supposedly based on a religious story. Even moreso, the Christians themselves should be protesting, since Gibson claimed that his film was based on the Gospels, when clearly it was based on very selective readings which supported the twisted plot, but which, overall, give a pretty warped portrayal of ‘the Passion’.
