Of course some gay men are promiscuous. But only a couple of years ago a well-known male baskeball player claimed to have had sex with tens of thousands of women. Generalizing about straight men from that basketball player’s boast would be about as accurate as generalizing from sensational news reports about gay men. The news people make a living by spreading sensational reports, not by spreading the word that most gay men prefer to settle down with someone special. Certainly the gay men I know want just that. But remember, when gay men do settle down, society does its best to place as many hurdles in the way as possible. For how many years has straight society told gay men that we are constitutionally unable to build a long-term relationship? And yet when we try, governments and churches make our lives as hard as possible. This notion of gay men willing to have sex with any man who’s breathing is one of straight men’s most self-satisfying fantasies. Lots of straight men – no matter how ugly, stupid or vulgar – like to think that any gay man desires nothing more than to seduce them. In fact, gay men are at least as choosy as straight men. And most straight men need have no fear of being desired by any gay man.
