Tim M.ParticipantI think the biggest thing that the proponents of straight-only unions are afraid of is that they’d stop being an exclusive club. Equality is a frightening concept for those who are in the social, economical, or political lead. Many people are afraid that something will lose its value once the concept of ‘better’ ceases to exist. It’s essentially the same fear of being average that drives certain country clubs to ban female memberships or prevented women from casting votes. People who believe that they’re at the top of the heap will fight tooth and nail to prevent others from sharing that position. Personally, though, I don’t see how letting people legally codify their commitment to each other would directly affect me or my individual well-being.
