Until recently I didn’t know there were names for blacks with darker or lighter skin tones. One name I’ve heard for really dark-skinned blacks is ‘tar-baby’ which sounds really hateful. A few years ago I had an African-American coworker with very dark skin. Some of the other coworkers called her ‘Chocolina’ as a nick-name. I thought that was kind of cute. The coworker was not offended–she knew it was a joke.
