Michael C.ParticipantIs there a nickname or colloquialism used for black people with really, really dark skin? For example, I know that light-skinned black people are sometimes referred to as 'redbone'.User Detail :

BradParticipantYes there are quite a few nicknames for dark-skinned Black people, most of them made up by bigoted Whites, and pretty much NONE of them should be considered for casual usage. I'd tell you what they are but then you and the rest of my White friends would be tempted to 'try them out'!User Detail :

Nichole19772ParticipantI black and I don't call light skinned or dark skinned blacks any certain names. Why are you asking? You want to get in on seperating us even more?User Detail :

Teresa19786ParticipantUntil recently I didn't know there were names for blacks with darker or lighter skin tones. One name I've heard for really dark-skinned blacks is 'tar-baby' which sounds really hateful. A few years ago I had an African-American coworker with very dark skin. Some of the other coworkers called her 'Chocolina' as a nick-name. I thought that was kind of cute. The coworker was not offended--she knew it was a joke.User Detail :

ntwayneParticipant'Redbone' is not a nickname or colloquialism. It is a derogatory term.User Detail :

DeeParticipantNo, there's no term to describe really dark skinned Black people. I happen to find very dark skinned Black people extremely attractive so, when I see one I'm usually in complete awe of their beauty. Also, just an fyi: the term 'red bone' is pretty outdated, so not a lot of people use that anymore. It's probably safest to simply lean away from hue insensitive labels and just stick with the 'call folks by their proper names' script. Take care!User Detail :

Michael C.ParticipantNo, I'm not trying to separate people. I was just curious. My girlfriend is black and I asked her, but she didn't really know either.User Detail :
