I am one of the top players in my school’s chess club and I am on the diving team, so I know what you mean. I think it comes down to envy. Chess takes a lot of mental skill, and not everyone wants to put the effort into it, so they feel that they have to put down the people who do. This is similar to the misconception that all athletes are stupid. It’s just a stereotype.
