The best analogy I ever heard was that it’s like being really hungry (or maybe needing to go to the bathroom badly). Obviously it’s not such a life-or-death situation as hunger: if you don’t satisfy the need to smoke you won’t die (the opposite, ironically). But that nagging physical need that just interrupts everything you do and gets progressively worse is similar.
