StilBilParticipantThe answer can be answered with a plane ticket outside the United States and viewing the media available to see how blacks from America are portrayed. Throughout the 20th century, most other countries’ interpretation of what defines different ethnic groups within the United States, especially blacks, is done so through media of some type. TV being the worst, with series and sitcoms that are just like radioactive waste: they never go away! Blacks still accept the roles of buffoons and step ‘n fetch-it characters. You need not look any further than what is being portrayed of black images on T.V. and in movies any day of the week . Of course, it’s not right but that’s all they (foreigners) have to go on if they have never met anyone in person to change that preconceived opinion. The same ole singing, dancing, eye rolling, ignorant, dopehead, pimp, ho, armed robber, thief, rapist, thug, superfly, shuffling image hasn’t really changed much in all these years. Media, be it books, mag-rags, newspapers, short or long film and or television, shapes or actually burn images into the core of those who have very little of anything else to balance those negatives with. The media engine is the most almighty and powerful medium of communication on the planet. The media machine is all about shaping minds in the direction that those running it see fit. On T.V. every week, our people keep accepting roles as the lowest forms of human on the planet, because in their minds they have to pay their dues to be fed in this line of occupation. An occupation that they choose willingly! . I remember sitting in the park one day and thinking about how many black toddlers and little kids are set in front of those (TV) images, day in, out and what effects it has when they become adults. To constantly see the image of yourself as the comedian buffoon, or person always on the other side of the law. I had often wished that since black actors could never seem to come together to produce quality images on their own enough, that they would just leave the industry for a year in protest. We would then find those negative roles being given to Hispanics no doubt.

StilBilParticipantActually ever generation wants to claim a social trend or fad to be of their own origination. The fact is that Gold teeth caps was prevalent in the south back in the 50’s and 60’s. They would have cutouts of a star or 1/4 moon to reveal the tooth behind as another option. It was in their eyes a fashion statement that only the hippest people of the street and nightlife would wear. Blacks weren’t necessarily defined in anything but so-called lower class back then, so that’s not even relevant. They just wanted to be different just like any other generation who never studies history. Technology and humans are very separate entities, so they saying ‘ That there is nothing new under the Sun’ only applies to humans, not technology! When U take the time to study history, people tend to reinvent more so that they truly create. That’s why bigotry, hatred, discrimination, etc will be around for a long time to come. All cultures since we live in America find a way to get noticed in this drama queen society. Gold teeth caps, piercing body parts, tattoos, loud multi-color hair, long curly fingernails, mohawks, shaved heads, trashy fashion, colored contacts and what ever the next one is. They all are the same, usually people who have a great desire to be noticed by the other what ever billion people on the planet!

StilBilParticipantI believe this is nothing new, it may be more prevelant today that years past. It is part of some deep seed inferiority issues, whereas lashing out at those that are different from them makes them feel adequate. This was one of the reasons of blackspeak originating from the inner city or ghetto environment. U sound different, look different, or simply act different. The difference is usually related to education or lack there of. To be frank with U, U are absolutely right, at some point U will be attacked. That’s because even though U may live in a community setting among them, U are of a different tribe so to speak. My younger sister went through this in the neighborhood we grew up in. They jumped on her because she was being bused to schools outside the neighborhood and didn’t socialize with them on their level enough to be one of them. There’s not much U can do as an individual about this, if U were to examine your household and theirs, U would begin to see the roots of where it comes from. In ones life, it is very important to not ignore your sense of perception, it could mean life or death on the streets. With that said, acknowledge them while in their presence, keep stepping, learn to circle yourself with positive people period and U will be fine! Count it all Joy!
