Stephen P.ParticipantScientology is an applied religous philosophy, or rather, a way of looking at and applying the tenets of Scientology to making your life better. One of the underlying beliefs is that man is a spiritual being, refered to as a thetan (from theta, greek for spirit). He doesn’t have a soul; he is the soul – a spiritual being having an earthly experience. We seek to grow as spiritual beings and improve our lives and others around us by applying knowledge regarding education, communication, ethical living and our place in this universe.
Part of the debate is that our churches do not tithe or pass a plate to earn operating expenses. We offer courses that teach people how to make their lives better and spiritual counseling called auditing. Some would say our prices our exorbitant, but those who have gained from these lessons will gladly return for the next lesson.
Aside from that, it’s not our beliefs that have caused controversy, it’s our opposition to the psychiatric industry, which we consider one of the most suppressive forces on earth. Their entrenched ties within the government unleashed a campaign of propaganda, espionage, IRS investigations and personal attacks of founder L. Ron Hubbard. It finally ended in 1994 when the IRS concluded, after the most thorough investigation of a nonprofit organization ever, that Scientology was a bonifide religion. To this day the suppressive elements still use smear tactics to discredit us.
After the U.S. recognition, many other countries followed suit, but there are still others that continue to be influenced by suppressive pychiatry.
As far as celebrities go, they will all resoundingly give Scientology the credit for teaching them what they needed to make them the successes they are. Please don’t take my word for it. For the most comprehensive reference online, try http://www.scientology.org

Stephen P.ParticipantUnlike Christian religions that have had centuries to spread the word of who and what they are, we have had just a scant 50 years to do so, and we have come a long way. We take a modern approach to dissemination: We advertise. We don’t go knocking door to door, but we do try to reach people. The story of Scientology goes something like this: Scientology was discovered, it was written down so others could learn it, others learned and used it, they discovered that it worked and they told others and it was passed on. We feel we offer what people need in these times: A way or method to make improvements in their lives. Our zeal to reach people matches the urgency that we feel for saving this planet.
