This very interesting and vastly debatable subject was posed in the movie Twilight of the Goulds(sp?). In it, a genetic researcher finds out that his and his wife’s baby carries the gene linked to homosexuality. I would suggest anyone interested in this topic view this movie. I believe it accurately depicts the reactions of each of the family members from their point of view, i.e. Jewish mother, gay son, Jewish grandmother, etc.

Now, the question being asked of me – Would I change myself from gay to straight? No, although there were many times during my teen years when I wished I was more like everyone else. I am happy and in a loving relationship that I would not give up for anything. I think this question would be like asking a black person, Would you want to be changed to Caucasion? I love myself and would not change my sexual orientation. I fear that doing so for anyone would be like pulling a thread out of a beautiful quilt: It could change everything about me, for this one aspect of me has shaped me to be who I am today.

Lastly, the question of “Will I welcome the options this discovery presents?” I believe our society is ready for such discoveries. I am scared that babies could be aborted for no other reason than exhibiting a positive showing of this gene. But I ask myself, “Is that such a bad thing?” I am confident that the people who would consider killing their unborn child for no other reason but his presumed sexual orientation, should not be blessed with this child in the first place. In my opinion, just in my lifetime the quality of life for the Lesbian/Bisexual/Gay/Transgender community has improved by such leaps and bounds that I would not wish for anyone to go through the hate and torment that has caused so many suicides in the gay population.

In summary, I believe our society is ready for this discovery. I also believe it will only go to improve the quality of life of all people on this planet. However, as a gay male, I am very concerned as to how this “discovery” will be used.

While some of us in the gay community have a rather “in-your-face” mentality, I don’t really know that this is a case of that. You claim that “I never see straight people acting like, ‘I’m straight'”. I beg to differ. Every time I watch a movie, I see ‘I’m straight!’, Every time I see photos on co-workers’ desks, I see ‘I’m straight!’, Every time I go to the beach or pool, I see ‘I’m straight!’, Every time I go to community events, I see – yep… ‘I’m straight!’. I think some people are overly sensitive to homosexuals and us being “ourselves.” While I know some of us can be a bit militant – and I am not suggesting that this is not a case like that – I ask that we are afforded the same respect as others. A perfect example of this: You haven’t seen – yet – a gay couple in bed or kiss on primetime TV.
