Many gay kids commit or attempt suicide because they are told that falling in love with someone of the same sex is evil, and yet that is how God has ‘wired’ them and they have no choice. The kids think they have no one to turn to because in many cases they actually don’t have anyone to turn to. Telling their parents (or minister or teacher or friends) what is going on often leads to ostracism, abandonment or violence. I knew from the age of eight that I liked other girls and that I could never ever let anyone know. For some reason, keeping some of the most important parts of myself a dreaded secret all through adolescence made me depressed, isolated and suicidal. Go figure. I cannot believe that a loving God would set an eight-year-old up for misery and abuse. If there were some all-powerful being that would do such a thing, then I could not call that being anything but evil. Things have improved, though – only 10 years ago many so-called Christians still publicly refused to condemn the murder of gays.

That’s a new one for me. I’m a lesbian who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area where there is a relatively large concentration of lesbians, and I can honestly say I’ve never seen a woman I knew was a lesbian wearing Winnie the Pooh clothing. In fact, I associate Winnie the Pooh clothes on grownups almost exclusively with straight suburban women. I wonder if this is a local phenomenon – the lesbian community is as susceptible to fads as any other group. I also wonder how many lesbians you’ve seen wearing these clothes, and whether perhaps they knew each other.

This seems to be a common misconception among people who have not studied much biology and haven’t had much exposure to farm animal breeding. In fact, biologists have known for centuries that there are animals who engage in homosexual activity. Farmers who breed sheep, cattle, etc. also know that there are some individual rams and bulls that show no interest at all in ewes and cows and instead prefer to mount other males. They can’t afford to deny it because they have to take into account that such animals cannot be successfully bred. Your post suggests you have problems with gay people, and would like to justify your dislike by suggesting that they are unnatural. Since this is factually incorrect (and if you do any research into the topic beyond anti-gay websites you will find that you don’t have to take my word for it) I suggest that you need to find some other form of self-justification if you have any interest in truth. I’ll point out that, though I find your homophobia disturbing, there is no inherent reason that you need to feel that something is ‘right’ just because animals do it. So perhaps you can make a 180 degree turnaround and claim that homosexuality is wrong because it means giving it to base animal instincts. Or, you might take this opportunity to wonder whether your dislike of gays is based on anything rational. in reply to Mesg ID 21200045453

All the arguments people make in general and have made in this forum about how allowing gay marriage will open up the doors for polygamous marriage or incestuous marriage can be made equally well about interracial marriage. Interracial marriage was traditionally prohibited in some societies, including the United States, but that prohibition has been (at least legally) ended. One could argue that if traditional strictures about marrying only one’s “own kind” were lifted in order to allow people the freedom to marry whomever they loved regardless of race that the gates would then be opened to allowing people to marry whomever they wanted regardless of age, sex or number. But that clearly did not happen. Similarly, ending restriction of marriage rights based on gender does not entail ending restrictions based on age or number of people involved.

The church does hold gays and lesbians to a standard that it does not hold heterosexuals and Normand to. Gays and lesbians are expected by the Catholic Church to go through life without being physically intimate with the people they are in love with and committed to. Heterosexuals are held to no such standard.
