R.W.J.MemberSun tanning among whites is a socioeconomic thing. The tan differentiates the person from the working classes. If we look back to when the working classes spent most of their time working outdoors, pre-industrialization, we see that the skin color to aspire to was alabaster white. A tan or dark skin in general was seen as being the mark of the lower classes (possible the source of the original distinction between the fair and dark races). After the industrialization of the West, when the working classes no longer were tanned as part of their labors, the mark of the leisure class became a ‘healthy tan.’ The tan was the physical representation of the wealth necessary to have time to spend in outdoor recreation.

R.W.J.MemberFirstly, there is no native anmerican population, what there is, is a set of decendents from a pre-mogolod race who immigrated here during on of the ice ages, possible the same genetic stock from which the caucasians developed from. Secondly, the essential trait of an ‘American’, meaning a citizen of the United States of America, is the internalization of a family of political and social ideals. While there is much in our (yes I consider myself to be an American)collective history which I would rather not have in it – slavery, force assimilation of the American Indians, the treatment of the non-anlgosaxon europeans, I do have to point out that only in the American Tradition do we see a historical example of the majority and impowered race/class/ethnicity shed blood and treasure to remove opression from the opressed. It was white abolitionists and white soldiers that won the Civil War. It was white abolitionists that attempted reconstruction. It was rich and newly created middle class Americans that initially worked to pass civil rights legislation like the 14 & 16 Ammendments to the US Constitution, a white man who integrated the US Armed Forces after World War II. These whites were not segragated into a single political party but whites in the Republican, Democrat and Progressive Parties. Even such unreconstructed slave holders as Jefferson and Washington recognized that slavery and race and ethnicity based discrimination were contrary to the very founding principals of this country and atepmted to corect these injustices to the best of thier abilities and strength. It was the internalization of our secular orthodoxy that allowed all o these things to happen as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and The Bill of Rights, to include the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 10th ammendments most especially . And it is in the implicit disparagement of that secular orthodoxy that multiculturalism, anti-americanism, racism, classism, white guilt and separatism pose the clearist present danger to the continuation of this grand experiment, that undermine this shining city o the hill that is known as the USA.

R.W.J.MemberThis is a socio-economic issue. When the Welfare State was first created it had substantial incentives for poor couple to not establish paternity, an unwed mother was seen as more deserving of assistance than a poor two parent home with established paternity. Just re-read either ‘My Fair Lady’ or ‘Pigmanlian’ to see how this victorian sensibility of deserving poor is developed. An umwed mother was taken advantage of by a scondrel and deserving of our pity, a poor family was not. This concept of desrving has been maintained by our government assistance programs. Until recently an unwed mother received more assistance than a two parent home. This left the father with two option, remain with his family, establish paternity and watch his child starve, or abandon them and see his childern only fail to flurish. Now add this stress to a class/race who has already seen the family unit concept weaked by slavery, which has a cultural tradition of matriarchy, add recent feminist thought, and look at the results. The last thing that we need to add to this formula is the fact that behaviors migrate across races in similar social-economic conditions and then migrate up the class structure. If poor black folks are doing it now, poor white folks will be doing it tomorrow. Illegitamacy was primarily a problem amoung poor blacks in the late fifties and sixties, it migrated to poor whites during the seventies, and in the eighties it migrated up the class ladder into the middle class whites and blacks. This social entropy effect has been documented in the athropoligical journals for years.
