I am one of many Indian (Hindu) women wearing this dot every day on my forehead. Besides being used for makeup, it (the Bindi) has much religious importance. As per Hinduism, the middle part of the forehead is the highest center to which the divine powers situated in every human being (inside the lowest center, just above the abdomen) must be activated and lifted up to gain self-realization (Moksha). The dot is one of the many small ways that make this procedure faster for the women's body. This is much more scientifically proved in the shastras (Hindu Doctrines). Though hard to imagine, the way this works automatically without the knowledge of the human being can be explained using the in-depth study of Yoga (the art of acheiving Moksha and a healthy body based on Hinduism).
