    When I had sex the first time, at 16, it hurt so piercingly that I tried to crawl up the wall behind me. A friend of mine, also 16, bled so badly she had to stop. But I’ve had other friends say they had no problem at all with it. My understanding is that a lot of it depends on your age (the older you are, the easier it is) and the width of your hips.

    I should make clear that this does not reflect my feelings about this issue (in fact, I don’t really believe it to be an issue), but in response to diet affecting body odors, I recently read an article published in Esquire several years ago. In the quote below from this story, an unnamed NBA player is criticizing fellow player Charles Barkley for suggesting that white women smell better than black women: ‘Charles Barkley had the nerve to say that black women don’t have good hygiene. Well, he’s an asshole. He doesn’t know that the pores and the sweat secretion glands, the hair products, and all that is different and is why — the different foods — is why they smell different. He’s an asshole cause he didn’t know that.’
