Pete-W30369ParticipantI spent 2 years in the USA, and noticed the same thing. As far as I can tell, it works like this: service workers in the USA are essentially unpaid, and are expected to earn their wages by getting tips from customers. If you want someone in the USA to give you any sort of service, you have to leave a constant trail of $1 bills in front of them. As soon as the tips stop, so does the service. This is no doubt incredibly demeaning and humiliating for the service worker, which explains their resentful rudeness.
