PattonParticipantHi, I just came across your question. I grew up in Columbia, SC. I moved away when I was 15 (off to school) but visit my family there at least twice a year. My wife was born in Cambodia. She and I are both pretty conscious about people’s reactions to seeing us together, especially with our children (2 and 6 years old). From whites, especially those older than us, we often get generic stares or double-takes, but it doesn’t happen that often. Some whites (usually women it seems, and usually middle-aged) give us ‘knowing’ smiles, especially if we have our children with us. Kind of patronizing, but to me it’s just a result of not much interaction with people unlike themselves. Incidentally, we ALWAYS get inquisitive stares from Asians. They always try to guess what my wife is (Filipina? Thai? Indonesian?). But we’ve never felt threatened or unwelcome. Not quite your situation because my wife isn’t black, but I think Charleston, and Wilmington too, would be a great place to live.
