Stereotyping has a dramatically negative influence on society today, just as it has in the past. The use of stereotypes act to delude and distort peoples’ perception. Stereotypes are derived from a desire to simplify. People find it difficult to cope with others who they don’t completely understand. Stereotyping creates character archetypes from which they can derive a simple understanding of that person. Unforunately, stereotyping creates an oversimplification of certain peoples and cultures. Ultimately, stereotyping may lead to racism and other forms of prejudice. As a reseach assistant for a diversity project for the gov’t of Ontario, I come across quite a bit of material on stereotypes in the workplace.
