I assume that people say those things because they want you to know that they are not homophobic. There are probably people who would avoid you or treat you badly after learning that you are a lesbian. They are trying to let you know that they won’t. Also, since homosexuals, especially open ones, are very much a minority, they probably don’t have enough experience dealing with people telling them they are gay to make the kinds of responses you would prefer.
