You should not have to explain your ethnic background in that way to anyone – if you do, it’s their problem, not yours. If these people suddenly change their behavior toward you when they discover your ‘real’ ethnicity, then they don’t really know you, and they don’t care to know you as a person, either. They are only seeing your physical characteristics and are making assumptions about you based on that. Are these the kinds of friends and associates you would truly want?

I think most of the ‘African-American’ nurses that you are referring to are actually immigrants from the Caribbean who are older, have families home and abroad to support, and therefore need to make money quickly. So they select a field where they can make the most amount of money with relatively less time invested in obtaining educational qualifications. In NYC for example, someone with an associate’s degree in nursing can make as much money as a Ph.D. in a health care related field. I do not believe it has anything to do with ‘being in control.’ As a matter of fact, nurses do not have that much control unless they are in some kind of supervisory position. They are obligated to the very needy patients that they serve as well as to the demands of the higher ups (e.g., doctors, administrative personnel, etc) in the hospitals or clinics. Nursing is a very difficult job and is actually underpaid, and at times demeaning. So to answer your question, the high rate of Black females in nursing is probably due to a combination of economic reasons, and as Anne stated, the higher proportion of blacks residing in those areas.
